A Flagstaff-based space company has won a $30 million contract to raise the orbit of a space-based NASA observatory next year before it can drop uncontrolled back into Earth’s atmosphere.

NASA officials say they are in a race against time as the agency’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and its three-telescope system studying gamma rays from space needs a rescue.

The plan is “called rendezvous proximity operations and docking.” Next year, Katalyst Space Technologies will launch a ship into outer space, approach NASA’s observatory; then the plan anticipates both spacecraft will zero out their velocities and dock perfectly for the next step.

Arizona Public Service (APS) was recently named to Newsweek’s 2024 list of Most Trustworthy Companies in America.

Trust may be the most important dynamic between consumers and the companies they do business with—it affects decisions about where to shop, what to buy and even where to work.

Newsweek has partnered with Statista for the third time in a ranking that lists 700 U.S. companies based on trustworthiness. Public and private companies across 23 industries—including banking, insurance, media and clothing—were included based on an independent survey of about 25,000 Americans that took place in October and November 2023.

A total of 97,000 company evaluations were submitted that considered the points of view of potential customers, investors and employees.

February 13, 2025

Dear colleagues,

Today marks a moment of great pride for Northern Arizona University as we are recognized with the Carnegie Research 1 (R1) designation—the highest classification for research institutions in the United States. This achievement is a testament to years of exceptional work by our faculty, staff, and students who drive research excellence and innovation every day.

Our R1 status recognizes the transformative impact NAU faculty have in their fields, creating new knowledge and driving innovation, as well as the quality and scope of our graduate programs that contribute to growing the next generation of researchers and practitioners. It also reinforces our dedication to a student-centered approach and the teacher-scholar model that is at the heart of our institutional identity. Our faculty are not only advancing cutting-edge research, but they are also providing exceptional educational experiences that prepare our students for dynamic, evolving careers in the modern workforce.

I encourage you to read our full news release about NAU’s R1 status.

While we celebrate this historic milestone, I also want to acknowledge that we operate in a complex and changing environment. Recent federal actions have introduced new uncertainties into research funding—a challenge we face with transparency and resolve. As we navigate this new landscape, we remain committed to our mission of increasing student access, success, and career readiness, and to engaging in impactful research and scholarly endeavors across the disciplines. We continue to prioritize student engagement with research, focus on the strategically identified research areas where we have historically been strong, and seek opportunities to deliver impactful discoveries and solutions.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication to our mission. Let’s join in celebrating this tremendous success that places NAU at the forefront of universities throughout the country. And let’s move forward with optimism and purpose to tackle the challenges before us and leave a lasting impact on the word.

With pride,

José Luis

To begin, the city’s economic development efforts are often accomplished working with partners such as the Economic Collaborative of Northern Arizona (ECONA), Moonshot, Local First, the Chamber of Commerce, the Small Business Development Center, Northern Arizona University, Coconino County and others. The Economic Development Program uses Bed, Board and Beverage (BBB) – Economic Development funding to support and grow the local economy in a number of ways.

One example is entrepreneurial support and facilities provided through Moonshot at the Incubator and Accelerator. This provides businesses coaching and mentorship while founders get their business up and running.
